Memorial Day is almost here, and so we honor those brave men and women who gave their lives to protect and defend our country. Memorial Day was originally celebrated as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War which ended in 1865, claiming more lives than any other conflict in US history, establishing the need for our country’s first national cemeteries, including South Walton’s Historic Gulf Coast Cemetery.
