Memorial Day is almost here, and so we honor those brave men and women who gave their lives to protect and defend our country. Many will spend this holiday of remembrance and gratitude enjoying our beautiful beaches here in South Walton, as Memorial Day weekend also marks the unofficial start of South Walton’s summer vacation season.
Memorial Day was originally celebrated as Decoration Day and originated in the years following the Civil War which ended in 1865, claiming more lives than any other conflict in US history, establishing the need for our country’s first national cemeteries, including South Walton’s Historic Gulf Coast Cemetery.
If you’re visiting the beaches of South Walton this Memorial Day, we offer a variety of ways to celebrate the dedication of our fallen heroes:
On Sunday, May 27th from 7:30-9:30, the Sinfonia Gulf Coast Orchestra will perform a free concert under the palm trees at the Alys Beach Amphitheatre followed by fireworks. Please bring “low back” chairs only, and blankets. Food and beverages will be available onsite for purchase.
Calling all yogis! Start your Memorial Day with good energy and a positive vibe. Bring your mat or blanket to The Artists of Gulf Place, located at Gulf Place Town Center, at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, May 28th for a Vinyasa Flow class with Becky Oliphant-Smith. Drop in classes are $20.
Historic Gulf Coast Cemetery, located at 1466 County Road 393, will host its annual ceremony on Monday, May 28th at 10:00 a.m. featuring the Seaside Middle School’s Cloud 9 Orchestra playing patriotic music along with a military jet flyover. The ceremony will conclude with a “missing man” flyover formation performed with WWII aircraft by the Destin Warbirds.
The cast of the Seaside REP Theatre will perform “The Prince and the Pauper” on Monday, May 28th at 6:30 p.m. in the Seaside Amphitheater. The show is free, so bring a blanket or low back chairs, some snacks and drinks, and enjoy the show!
Rosemary Beach Summer Concert Series will feature Sun, Surf, and Sand – The Music of the Beach Boys on Monday, May 28th from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. on the East Long Green. Bring blankets and/or chairs, and enjoy a fun-filled night with great music!
If you’re not too tired from all the Memorial Day festivities on Monday, check out a local’s favorite, The Forrest Williams Band, at the Hub in Seacrest on Tuesday, May 29th at 7:00 p.m. Bring your dancing shoes, it’s impossible to sit when Forrest is playing!
While you’re enjoying our beautiful beaches this Memorial Day, let us not forget how all of this fun is possible by reflecting on those who have sacrificed their lives, our living veterans, and those protecting us today. We at Dune Allen Realty wish you and your family a safe and happy Memorial Day!
